Taste Ontario

With big mounds of the cold white fluffy stuff obscuring the ground and negative double-digits on the thermometer, it’s easy to forget we Torontonians have a great wine growing region in our backyard. But February is actually one of the best times of year to reacquaint yourself with great Ontario wine thanks to Cuvée―the industry’s annual celebration of winemaking excellence.

This year’s Cuvée Grand Tasting will be held Feb 27th at the Fallsview Casino and features over 50 Ontario wineries and their winemakers pouring their favourite wine. This popular returning theme gives attendees the opportunity to try some of Ontario’s best wines (many of which will be new and recent releases along with some previews of soon-to-be-released bottles) and have one-on-one conversations with the winemakers. Also making a return is the Aprés Cuvée After Party with dancing as well as nightcap bar featuring local sparkling, Icewine and craft beer.

This year also marks couple small changes for Cuvée. For the first time a trio of Toronto-based chefs (Trista Sheen of Crush Winebar, Carlos Deveyra of Woods & David Chrystian of Centre for Wine and Food Experimentation) will be joining 10 Niagara-based of chefs cooking live at the food stations during the grand tasting. This also marks an increase in the number of chefs―great wine and food are partners that make each other better. This year’s Cuvée sees a behind the scenes change that is important for supporters of the Ontario wine industry. At last year’s Cuvée,the Niagara Community Foundation, who ran Cuvée as a marquee fund-raising event for ten years, announced it was handing the event over to Brock University’s Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) in 2015. The event’s celebratory spirit and charity fundraising are continuing under CCOVI, but proceeds will now be earmarked for purposes that will more directly benefit the Ontario wine industry through the likes of scholarships and research projects at CCOVI.

Tickets for the Cuvée Grand Tasting are $200 and available online through its website and include a passport for Cuvée en Route (also available online or at wineries for $30 as a separate purchase for those not attending the grand tasting). Running the weekend of Cuvée, en Route allows wine lovers to explore some of province’s best juice with participating wineries pouring special flights including top-label wines, previews, new releases and back vintages.
